The first time I went to the Met, I made the classic mistake. I walked in the front doors, looked up at that enormous staircase and those marble halls, and thought, okay, I'll just start here and see everything. Three hours later I was sitting on a bench in the European paintings wing, feet aching, having seen maybe a fifth of the building — and I still hadn't found the Egyptian temple everyone talks about. I left feeling like I'd failed a test nobody told me I was taking.
I've been back a dozen times since — sometimes for a special exhibition, sometimes just because it's one of my favorite places in New York to spend a quiet afternoon. And here's the thing I wish someone had told me on day one: you cannot see the Met. Not in a day. Not in a week. The point isn't to see all of it. The point is to walk a smart route through the parts you actually care about, and let the rest be a reason to come back.
So this is the route I take now, the one I give to friends visiting from Japan, and the one I'd hand my own mom if she flew over. Floor by floor, with the stops I think are genuinely worth your tired feet.
First, the boring-but-important stuff: getting in
The Met sits right on the edge of Central Park on the Upper East Side, at 1000 Fifth Avenue. Take the 4, 5, or 6 subway to 86th Street and it's about a ten-minute walk. You'll know you're close when you see the crowd sitting on those famous front steps — yes, the same steps from a hundred movies and shows.
Here's something a lot of first-timers don't realize: if you're not a New York State resident, the ticket is a flat price — around $30 for adults, less for seniors and students, and kids under 12 are free. (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut residents can still pay-what-you-wish, but you'll need ID.) Buy online ahead of time if you can; the line at the desk on a Saturday is not how you want to start your day.
Gohan World tip: Go on a Friday or Saturday. The Met stays open until 9pm those nights, and the late hours are so much calmer than midday weekends. There's often live music up on the balcony bar too — it turns the whole place into something kind of magical after dark.
When you walk in, the information desk is right in front of you in the Great Hall. Grab a map. They sometimes have them in Japanese, and the staff is genuinely multilingual — I've watched them help my relatives in Japanese without missing a beat. Take thirty seconds with that map before you move. The sections are color-coded, and a little planning here saves you an hour of wandering later.
Start downstairs on the right: Egypt and the Temple of Dendur
My favorite way in is to head straight for the Egyptian wing — the orange section on the right side of the map, on the first floor. It's one of the most complete Egyptian collections outside of Egypt, and you move through room after room of it building up to the big one.
And the big one really is big. The Temple of Dendur sits in a huge glass-walled room with a reflecting pool in front of it, light pouring in. It's a real 2,000-year-old Egyptian temple — Egypt gave it to the United States as a thank-you for helping rescue monuments that were going to be flooded by a dam. Get up close and you can still see the carved hieroglyphs. I've sat in that room more times than I can count. It's bright, it's calm, and it's a genuinely good place to just breathe at the start of a long day.

Into the American Wing
From Dendur, follow the map into the blue section — the American Wing. The heart of it is the Charles Engelhard Court, another one of those sun-filled glass rooms (the Met does these so well). There's a golden Diana statue in the middle, and behind her, a façade that was literally moved from a building on Wall Street. There's a café here too, which is worth filing away for later.
Don't rush past the Tiffany stained glass — the colors are unreal in person, and right near it there's a staircase rescued from the old Chicago Stock Exchange. If you care at all about architecture, the Frank Lloyd Wright Room is tucked in this wing too, an entire preserved room from one of his houses.
Armor, knights, and a surprise from Japan
Next door is the arms and armor hall, and honestly even people who think they don't care about armor end up loving this room. Banners hanging from the ceiling, full suits of armor lined up, mounted knights. But here's my favorite part, and the part I always point out to friends visiting from Japan: there's a whole collection of antique Japanese armor and swords here. Stuff so well-preserved and ornate that even my relatives who grew up in Japan stood there going, we've never seen anything like this back home. There's something funny and a little moving about flying to New York to see the best of your own country's craftsmanship.
The quiet medieval and sculpture halls
Keep going and you'll hit the Medieval Sculpture Hall — a tall, hushed, almost church-like space. This is actually one of the oldest parts of the museum, here since it moved to this spot back in 1880. The European Sculpture Court nearby is another light-filled room full of Rodin and others; it genuinely feels like you stepped into a courtyard in France or Italy. There's a café here too (the Petrie Court Café), which does a proper lunch and afternoon tea — a good midpoint to refuel.
Navigation tip: Photos are fine without flash almost everywhere, and you're allowed to do pencil sketches — but no paint or pens. If you see people quietly sketching in the galleries, that's why. It's one of my favorite things to watch.
Upstairs: the paintings everyone comes for
Now — real talk — if European paintings are the only reason you're here (the Monets, the Van Goghs, the Vermeers), don't do my whole downstairs loop. Buy your ticket, go straight up that central staircase, and start on the second floor. You could spend your entire visit just up here.
The European Paintings galleries (the brown section, 1250–1800) hold something that still stuns me every time: five Vermeers, in a museum where the artist only made around thirty-some paintings in his whole life. Five of them. In one place. Standing in that room is one of those quiet 'how is this real' moments.

Then there's the purple section — 19th and early 20th century — and this is where the famous faces live. Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses and his straw-hat self-portrait. Monet's Haystacks, part of a series he painted over and over in different seasons and light. Renoir, a whole wall of him. Seurat, Gauguin, Klimt, Cézanne. If you've ever seen these paintings on a postcard or a tote bag, a lot of the originals are right here.

While you're up here, swing through the American Wing's second floor too. That huge painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware is here, and so is John Singer Sargent's Madame X — a portrait so scandalous when it was painted that the artist had to leave Paris over it. I love telling people that story right before they round the corner and see it.

If your feet still work: a few hidden corners
This is the part most day-trippers never reach, and it's where some of my favorite quiet rooms are. The Assyrian palace reliefs — 2,500 years old and somehow crisp as if carved last year. The Islamic Art galleries, with tiles and carpets and a whole reconstructed room. The Patio from a Spanish castle, shipped over stone by stone. The musical instruments gallery (genuinely hard to find — gallery 684) with multiple Stradivarius violins and the oldest surviving piano in the world.
And the modern wing has the names you'd know — Picasso, Lichtenstein, an Isamu Noguchi sculpture or two. Noguchi was Japanese-American, and seeing his work here always gives me that same dual-identity flicker I get standing in front of the Japanese armor.
Don't skip the roof (in summer)
From about May through October, the Met opens its rooftop garden, and it's one of the best free views in the city — Central Park spread out below, the skyline behind it. There's a café and martini bar up there, and a rotating art installation that changes every year. On a hot day, after the museum's heavy air conditioning, stepping out into the sun up here is exactly the reset you need.

Bring a little of the Met home
I almost always end my visit at the gift shop, and honestly I think the Met Store is one of the best museum shops anywhere. It's not cheesy keychain stuff — they make scarves, jewelry, and prints based directly on works in the collection. I have a Hokusai Great Wave tote I use constantly, and a Van Gogh scarf that gets compliments every single time. If you fall in love with a painting on the wall, there's a good chance you can take a version of it home — and if you can't make it to New York, the same merch is on the Met Store online.
How long should I spend at the Met?
Plan for at least three to four hours, and a full day if you want to see multiple wings without rushing. Most first-time visitors underestimate the size, since it is one of the largest art museums in the world. If you only have a couple of hours, pick one or two sections like Egyptian art and European paintings and skip the rest.

Friday and Saturday are ideal because the museum stays open until 9pm and the late evenings are far less crowded than weekend afternoons. Weekday mornings right at opening are also calm. Avoid midday on weekends if you can.
Is one ticket good for the Met Cloisters too?
Yes, your Met admission ticket is valid for both The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters on the same day. The Cloisters, up at the northern tip of Manhattan, focuses on medieval European art and gardens. If you have the energy, it is a beautiful and very different second stop.
